Find Every Subscription
Draining Your Account

I pointed Claude at my bank and it caught almost $200 a month I had no idea I was still paying for. The whole thing, given away in full: the exact prompt, the safe way to run it without handing over a single password, and what to do the moment you see the list.

Why This Works

Subscriptions are designed to be forgotten

Nobody cancels a subscription they remember. The ones that drain you are the ones you forgot about: the free trial that quietly started charging, the app you opened once, the tool you replaced six months ago but never turned off.

The reason you don't catch them is simple. They're small, they're spread out, and they're buried in months of transactions you never read line by line. $11.99 here, $7 there, a $79 annual renewal you didn't see coming. Individually they're nothing. Added up, they're real money leaving your account every single month for things you don't use.

Claude is very good at exactly this kind of work: reading a pile of transactions, spotting the patterns, and adding up the damage in seconds. You just have to point it at the data and give it the right instructions. That's the whole guide.

Step 1

Get your transactions to Claude

There are two ways to do this. Pick the one that fits your bank. The second one works for everybody, so if you're not sure, start there.

A

If your bank connects to Claude

A few banks have a connector or MCP that lets Claude read your transactions directly. I use Mercury, so I connected it and Claude pulled six months of activity on its own. If you have one of these, this is the fastest path. It's read-only. Claude reads your transactions, it does not move money or touch your account.

B

If it doesn't (this is most people)

Almost no bank connects directly, and you do not need one to do this. Log into your bank, download your last 3 to 6 months of statements (PDF or CSV both work), and upload those to Claude. A statement gives Claude all the context it needs to find every recurring charge. You're handing it a document to read, not access to your account, and never your login.

Three to six months is the sweet spot. It's enough to catch the monthly charges and the annual ones that only hit once a year, which are the renewals people forget most.

Step 2

Run the audit prompt

This is the whole thing. Paste it in right after you connect your bank or upload your statements. It works the same either way. It tells Claude to find every recurring charge, build a table sorted by what costs you most per year, flag the waste, total it up, and hand you a cancel list in priority order.

Copy-paste prompt

You're my personal subscription auditor. Your job is to find every recurring charge draining my accounts and tell me exactly what to cut.

Here's how you'll get my data, use whichever applies to me:
- If you're connected to my bank or card through a connector or MCP, pull the last 6 months of transactions yourself. Read-only. Do not move money or change anything.
- If you're not connected, I'll upload my last 3 to 6 months of bank and credit card statements. Work only from what I give you.

Then do this:

1. Find every charge that repeats. Same or similar merchant showing up on a regular cycle: weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. Catch the sneaky ones billed under odd company names too.

2. Build a table sorted by yearly cost, highest first. Columns: merchant, what it likely is, how often it charges, amount per charge, and total per year.

3. Flag the money I'm probably wasting:
   - Free trials that started charging
   - Anything I clearly haven't used in months
   - Two or more tools that do the same job (tell me which one to keep)
   - Price creep, where a subscription is charging more than it used to

4. Add it all up: my total monthly subscription spend, my total yearly spend, and how much I'd save if I cancelled everything you flagged.

5. Give me a cancel list in priority order, biggest and most painless savings first.

Ask me before guessing what any unclear charge is. When you're done, offer to write the cancellation emails or call scripts for the ones I decide to cut.

That's it. In about 30 seconds you'll have a full picture of every subscription you're paying for, ranked by how much it costs you a year, with the dead weight already flagged.

Step 3

Cancel, don't just read

The list is useless if you close the tab and forget it. The moment you see the cancel list, do two things while it's in front of you.

Cancel the obvious dead weight first. The trials you forgot, the duplicate tools, the thing you used once. These are pure win, no trade-off. Most take under a minute each.

Make Claude do the annoying ones. Some subscriptions hide the cancel button or make you email support on purpose. Don't fight it yourself. Ask Claude:

Bonus prompt

Write me a short, firm cancellation email for each subscription on my cancel list. Polite but final, no "are you sure" loopholes. Give me one per subscription, ready to send.

Run this once a quarter. New subscriptions sneak in constantly: a trial here, an upgrade there. A 30-second audit every few months keeps the leak closed for good.

Do This Safely

The honest part about your bank data

You're sharing financial information with an AI, so do it the smart way. None of this is scary, but it's worth being clear.

You never hand over a login. The statement method means Claude reads a document you uploaded. It cannot log into your bank, move money, or make a charge. Even a direct bank connector is read-only. It sees transactions, nothing more.

Black out what it doesn't need. Claude only needs the merchant names, dates, and amounts to find your subscriptions. It does not need your full account number. If it's on the statement and you'd rather hide it, cross it out before uploading. The audit works fine without it.

Use your own private session. Keep the chat to yourself and don't share the link. Treat the conversation like you'd treat the statement itself.

This isn't financial advice, it's a faster way to see what you're actually paying for. You make every cancel call. Claude just hands you the list nobody ever sits down to make.
