Mistake 1
Typing instead of talking to your AI
This one isn't a prompt. It's a 2-minute tool setup, and it's the fastest fix in this whole guide.
That's the entire setup. Now just talk instead of type. Hold the hotkey, say what you want (mistakes and all, it cleans that up automatically), let go.
You'll talk about 4x faster than you type. That means you naturally give your AI more context without doing anything extra. And more context is what actually makes the output better. Not a cleverer prompt.
Mistake 2
Re-explaining your context every single chat
You've probably seen the version of this where the prompt gets blurred out on screen. This is that prompt. The real thing, in full, nothing cropped.
Paste it into a fresh chat inside the project or folder you want it to remember. It builds three files and interviews you before touching any of them.
Copy-paste prompt
Set up a lightweight memory system for our future chats. Create three files in this folder: CLAUDE.md (how you should work with me: my rules, my tone preferences, what to always do and never do), USER.md (who I am: my role, my current focus, my goals), and MEMORY.md (a running log of decisions, preferences, and context you learn about me over time, organized by topic). Interview me first, one question at a time. Wait for my answer before asking the next one: 1. Who I am and what I do, in one or two sentences. 2. My current top priorities right now. 3. My working style preferences (how I like feedback, how much detail I want, how I like decisions made). 4. Anything you should never do when working with me. Fill in CLAUDE.md and USER.md from my answers as we go. Leave MEMORY.md as an empty running log with a short note at the top telling your future self the format to use and to keep it updated as we work together. From now on, read all three files at the start of every new chat before doing anything else.

Mistake 3
Never connecting your external tools to your AI
Most people use AI as a closed box. Type a question, get an answer, copy and paste it somewhere else by hand. Your AI can actually reach into the tools you already use every day. This prompt finds every connection worth making and ranks them by how much time each one saves you.
Copy-paste prompt
List every app I use regularly for work: email, calendar, docs, notes, CRM, project management, whatever it actually is. For each one, tell me in plain English: 1. Whether there's a direct connector or MCP integration available for you right now. 2. The exact steps to connect it. 3. One specific, concrete thing you'd be able to do for me the moment it's connected. Not a vague benefit, an actual action. Rank the list by which connection would save me the most time first. Give me the ranked list and the exact first-connection steps. Don't connect anything without me confirming first.
Mistake 4
Using AI without setting up global instructions
Global instructions are the block of text your AI reads at the start of every single chat: who you are, how you like to work, what to always do, what to never do. Without it, you're re-explaining yourself over and over, forever. This prompt builds the whole block for you.
Copy-paste prompt
Interview me, one question at a time, about who I am, what I do, how I like to work, and what you should never do. Keep asking follow-up questions until you have enough to write a complete global instructions block, the kind that goes into my AI's custom instructions settings and gets read at the start of every single chat. Cover: my name and role, my communication style preferences, tone rules, things you should always do, things you should never do, and any context you'd otherwise have to ask me for again and again. When you have enough, write the final instructions block in a copy-paste code box so I can drop it straight into Settings.
Mistake 5
Not telling your AI to ask clarifying questions
This is the one-line insurance policy. Add it to your global instructions and it changes how your AI handles everything it doesn't fully understand.
Add this line to your global instructions
If you don't have enough information to do something well, stop and ask me specific clarifying questions before proceeding. Never guess at missing context and present the result as if it were fact. A wrong guess costs me more time to fix than a question would have taken to answer.
Without this line, your AI will sometimes build things without understanding the full picture, then hand you the result like it's fact. Fixing that after the fact costs you more time than answering one clarifying question would have taken up front.
